IPv6 enabled – IPv6 is a new IP protocol that uses simplified packet headers and requires IPSec as a fundamental interoperability requirement. It also has improved support for mobile IP and computing devices.

Note: E900 does not support Guest network and Parental control.  E900 comes with the Cisco connect software but Cisco connect screen does not have option to setup Guest network and Parental control.

Access restriction feature is also not available on the setup page.

E900 comes with a Cisco connect software. You can use the Cisco connect software for the initial setup of your new E900. If you are running the software for the first time it will ask you to connect the modem to the router. But will not ask you to attach the computer with the Ethernet cable. However it will be better if you attach the computer with an Ethernet cable. Run the program and at the end it will get you on the Internet. You don’t need to do anything. The software will do all the settings on its own. It will also create the new wireless network with the unique name and password. Your WiFi name will be funny name like the name of fruit or animal with color for example white monkey or anything else. You will get all the wireless settings at the end of the installation. You can later change the SSID and the security key.

You can also setup E900 without any software or installation CD. Connect your computer directly to the modem and make sure that Internet is working through the modem. Connect the computer and modem to the router.

Connect your computer to one of the Ethernet ports on the router. Not to the Internet port. If you connect the computer to the internet port, it will not communicate with the router. And you will not be able to setup your router. Open the setup page of E900. Setup page is the page where you will see all the settings of the router.

Change the Internet connection settings according to your Internet service provider. In case of Cable Internet provider, you need to clone the MAC address of the main computer. In case of DSL Internet service, you need to change the PPPoE settings.

Once your main computer is able to go online, change the wireless settings. Create a new wireless network name. Enable security on the wireless network. Do not share your network key with anybody.

Connect your computer and other devices to the wireless network.

What is Linksys E900 default password?

Like other Linksys routers, default password of Linksys E900 router is admin. However if you have installed your router using Cisco connect software then your wireless network key will be the password of router also.

If you reset the router to factory default settings then admin will be the password. Remember if you reset E900 it will come back to factory default settings and you will lose all the settings.

Linksys Router Firmware Upgrade

How to upgrade firmware on Linksys router ?

Firmware is nothing but the software of your Linksys router.

The solution to many networking problems is firmware upgrade. If the wireless network connection is slow or intermittent then you can try changing advanced wireless settings or wireless channel on the router. However if the problem continues then I will suggest you to upgrade the firmware.

How to check current firmware version ?

Open the Internet browser and in the address bar type 192.168.1.1. Open the setup page. Click on Status tab. On the status page, you will find the current firmware version. Go to Linksys website and check for the firmware update for your model. If the new firmware is available on website then download it and upgrade it.

Linksys router firmware upgrade process :

Step 1: Download the latest firmware file from the website and save it on your main computer. Click here to download the file. Enter the proper model number in search support box. The model number along with version number is on the flip side of your router. Double check the model number and hardware version number. Do not download incorrect file.

Step 2: Connect the main computer to the Ethernet port with the Ethernet cable. Do not upgrade firmware using a wireless computer. Always connect the computer with the Ethernet cable. Make sure that Local area connection on your computer is enabled.

Step 3: I will suggest you to reset the router before and after upgrading the firmware. See How to reset Linksys router.

Step 4: Open Internet browser and in the address bar type 192.168.1.1. Open the setup page. Setup page is the page where you can change the settings manually.

Step 5: Click on Administration tab.

Step 6: Click on Firmware upgrade sub tab.

Step 7: Click on Browse or Select button and browse the firmware file that you have already downloaded on your main computer.

Step 8: Click on Upgrade firmware.

Step 9: Upgrade process will take approximately 1 to 3 minutes. At the end you will get the message ” upgrade successful”. If you get the message ” upgrade failed” then reset the router again and try to upgrade the firmware. Make sure that you have downloaded the correct file.

Step 10: Reset the router after upgrade is completed.

Step 11: Now you need to reconfigure the router.

NOTE: Do not try to open firmware file. It is a bin file and it needs special program to open the file. You need open the setup page of the Linksys router to upgrade firmware.

The firmware file for WRT54G hardware version 1 to version 4 is same. You can use the same file for all the 4 versions.

The firmware file for Hardware version 5 and 6 is same.
